ZEBU WAR
August 2021 - Commune Ifotaka, Madagascar - Portrait of Mrs. BEHORA (left), aged about 80, and her daughter NDAKOPE, 67. BEHORA says, "We have not received any help from anyone, a doctor just checked our health, we feel very tired, we do not eat enough.".For several decades, the Southeast of Madagascar has been a victim of the "KERE" phenomenon, as the local population calls it. KERE is the food crisis caused by a period of intense drought that causes farmers to stop growing crops for several months each year. Farmers find themselves without money and in a situation of "severe malnutrition", even famine. The lack of economic development in the region, accentuated by the feeling of being abandoned by the central power in Antananarivo, incites young boys to turn away from working the land and to participate in zebu rustling operations that will allow them to earn a better living.
