ZEBU WAR
August 2021 - Comune de Sampona, Madagascar - Portrait of RASOA Sylvia, 21, and her 3 children in their small house in the village of Ankilidoga, Commune de Sampona. RASOA Sylvia is a cassava and tomato producer. She has not produced anything this year. She says, "I think the last time we were able to eat rice was four months ago. The father of my children abandoned us when my last son was born. For several decades, the southeast of Madagascar has been the victim of the "KERE" phenomenon, a food crisis due to a period of intense drought that causes farmers to stop growing for several months. Farmers find themselves without money and in a situation of famine. The lack of economic development in the region, accentuated by the feeling of being abandoned by the central power in Antananarivo, incites young boys to turn away from working the land and to participate in zebu rustling operations that will allow them to earn a better living.
