ZEBU WAR
February 2013 - Betroka, Madagascar - Portrait of Mrs. Tognazy holding her nephew Avotra in her arms. In December 2012, Tognazy and her sister - pregnant with Avotra - fled their village, Voromiantsa, set on fire by the soldiers of Operation Tandroka. Avotra was born in the forest and his mother died giving birth to him. Tognazy walked with Avotra in his arms for 3 days before reaching the town of Betroka. Operation Tandroka was a large-scale military operation, launched by the authorities in December 2012 to try to eradicate the phenomenon of zebu thefts and trafficking. The soldiers were quickly accused by Amnesty International of having committed abuses and torture on villagers during their raids.
